OVERVIEW

This three-story, 21,000-square-foot facility was constructed to house 94 active duty and reserve Coast Guard members. Built to withstand category 5 hurricanes, the structure includes key resilience features like an elevated second level and breakaway walls on the ground floor. Additionally, the building’s steel moment frame design provides exceptional rigidity and blast resistance, while the brick exterior is secured to the main framework with steel clips, further enhancing its durability.

CHALLENGE

This project began as a design-bid concept but quickly shifted to design-build to expedite the schedule and return Coast Guard personnel to base. A key challenge arose when the general contractor required open risers for the stairs to allow water drainage. We drilled holes in the first-floor risers to meet this need, ensuring compliance and safety.

Six months in, Hurricane Ian hit with 160 mph winds and a 14-inch storm surge, submerging the stairs, which remarkably remained intact. As we neared completion, we replaced exposed connection bolts and refabricated the steel and metal decking, ensuring long-term resilience.

RESULTS

Despite setbacks from Hurricane Ian, completing this project was deeply significant for our team. We remained committed to delivering a modern, resilient building built to withstand future hurricanes and provide lasting support for our military. In recognition of our dedication, we were honored with the 2024 ABC Eagle Award.
