OVERVIEW

This project was meticulously designed from the ground up to stand as one of the nation’s premier facilities for patients recovering from traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, cancer treatment, and other complex conditions. This facility spans nine stories, encompassing a total of 80 inpatient beds across 250,000 square feet.

CHALLENGE

As the first publicly funded project we ever undertook, it was paramount to ensure its success on all fronts. However, we encountered several significant challenges along the way. Upon completion of the design phase, our construction timeline faced setbacks when we had to demolish the preexisting rehabilitation building and underground piping. One particularly daunting obstacle was the installation of the primary braced frame elevator columns, each weighing nearly 600 lbs. per foot with a 3” base plate measuring 8’x8’ square, totaling 38,000 lbs. each. This made their assembly and fabrication incredibly challenging. Despite these hurdles, our team persevered with determination and resourcefulness to ensure the successful completion of the Jackson Hospital Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center.

RESULTS

Despite setbacks caused by the demolition of the preexisting rehabilitation building, it ultimately worked to our advantage. This allowed us to get ahead in the fabrication process. Shipping two truckloads of steel daily, totaling 80,000 lbs, ensured that the field erection crew stayed on schedule. As a result, this project was a tremendous success, culminating in our receipt of the ABC Excellence in Construction Award in 2020.
